do you have any recommendations for jewish media (movies, tv shows, books, etc) that isnt painfully zionist? it doesnt even have to be explicitly anti-zionist (although that would be preferred, just hard to find) , just ANYTHING that doesnt bend over backwards to shove isr**l down your throat. i just watched 'the chosen' (1987) for the first time (i know i know im late) and am so disappointed.
Hey anon. There are many pieces of media I can think of!
Music:
Daniel Kahn Batya Levine I don't think Debbie Friedman has any Zionist songs (if anyone can confirm this that would be great)
Chabad Religion; Yes, Chabad is Zionist but even if the band members are Chabad (which I don't know at all) it's more of a play on words/reference to the band Bad Religion and nothing more.
Fully Automated Luxury Kosher Space Kibbutz; I know the word kibbutz is in there but that's the only thing about this group that can be interpreted as Zionist (imo the reference to a kibbutz is not an endorsement of Zionism but just a neutral reference to it)
I don't think Schmeckel has any Zionist songs. There is a line in their song Maybe She's Shomer Negiah "But we didn't shake hands when I said 'chag sameach' / 'cause she's keepin' it Kosher like Shmuley Boteach" but I don't think it's an endorsement of the Shmuley Boteach.
Movies:
There's the classic Fiddler on the Roof; Sholem Aleichem (who wrote the short stories the movie is based on) was a Zionist and there's a part at the end of the movie that can be interpreted as endorsing Zionism but it's a very minor part of the plot.
The Rabbi's Cat
Yentl
Arranged
An American Pickle
You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah; the synagogue where it takes place has Israeli flags and yes I know Adam Sandler is a Zionist but as far as Zionism in the actual movie it's just the flags.
Sixty Six
Keeping Up With the Steins
TV Shows:
The Rugrats is famous for being the first cartoon to have Hannakah and Passover episodes
Hey Arnold has an episode where one of the characters (Harold) has a Bar Mitzvah. There's other episodes that reference Harold's Jewishness but this is the only one where it's a major part of the plot.
As Told by Ginger has a Hannakah episode
Lizzie McGuire has an episode where on of the characters (Gordo) has a Bar Mitzvah
Arthur has a Yom Kippur episode
Muppet Babies has a Hannakah episode
Elena of Avalor has a Hannakah episode
Books:
I rarely finish books but I can say that I did finish Becoming Eve, which is Abby Stein's memoir and it's great
If anyone else has any other recommendations please either tell me in the replies or the reblogs

💙for kanej, let’s goooooooo 🫶
drunken/tipsy kiss
For the record, Kaz is blaming Jesper for this one.
To be fair, Kaz blames Jesper for a lot of things. Like teaching Inej's male cousins the words to that stupid Kaelish love song, "Black is the Color," or some such thing, or insisting on trying to introduce color to Kaz's wardrobe, or the mangy orange and white cat that's taken up residence in the Slat. Granted, the last thing is not really Jesper's fault, but given time, and the proper motivation, Kaz is confident he can pin the blame on Jesper somehow.
Not this time, though. No, this time, this whole stupid situation is entirely Jesper's fault.
Jesper's fault, and the homemade moonshine that Colm Fahey brews with peaches and strawberries and wild ginger. He sent Jesper a jar of the stuff for the winter Kerst celebration, and now it seems like the entire Slat is near falling down drunk.
"It was one jar," Kaz says now, his tongue oddly thick. He hadn't been able to escape getting a glass shoved into his hand, so he'd looked at the seemingly innocuous pinkish-gold liquid and knocked it back without even thinking. He's had paint thinner that's milder than whatever brew this is. "How does one jar do all this?"
Inej is listing besides him, her long braid nearly coming undone. She says wisely, "Jesper says his da brews it with the fermented honey water. To give it, it, you know. Extra strength."
"All the Saints and their ugly mothers," Kaz mumbles and Inej swats at him, and misses by a mile. Which is a sign of just how potent this stuff is.
Inej had accepted a glass of moonshine from Jesper, tempered with water, and she'd danced with nearly everyone in the Slat--all the young kids, Anika, Pim, Roeder, Jesper, even Wylan, who let Inej drag him away from the upright piano someone shoved into the corner. No one's played it until tonight, until Wylan has started playing. Then someone got out a tin pennywhistle and another person dragged in a fiddler player from one of musician troupes that walk the Barrel busking inside, and the moonshine had flowed like water.
Music, wild and raucous and only slightly out of tune, poured out of the Slat, and the Dregs had danced like madmen, like heathens, howling at the winter moon. Kaz sat by the wall and watched; no one would ask Dirtyhands to dance, even if they didn't account for his leg. But he didn't mind watching Inej dance, her hair whipping around her, as she used her hands and feet to tell a story of a Saint defeating a monster on a mountain. Her hair is curtain of black silk in the light, and he wants to bury his face in it.
He blinks at the unguarded thought, shifting as Inej lists further and further, leaning into him more fully. "Sorry, sorry," she says, her s's oddly, delightfully sharp. Like a piece of ginger candy. "The room's dancing."
"The room's not dancing, you are," he says nonsensically and then gives up on shifting altogether. Inej is pressed up against him now, their layers of clothing between them prevent any skin on skin touch, but his heart pounds at her proximity anyways. He suspects that no matter how long he's gotten used to touching her, it always will.
"Did you like it?" Inej asks, a little dizzily. "Seeing me dance," she clarifies when he doesn't answer right away. "I didn't have the bell anklets, or the finger cymbals, but I think I got all the steps right. From what I could remember. Mama would do it better, though. Or Cousin Kathani."
Kaz couldn't tell her what they could do any better than Inej, and says so. Inej beams up at him, that smile he'd crawl over hot coals for, and for one glorious moment, leans her head on his shoulder. "One day I'll take you," she says, as the room continues to waltz and weave around them. "And you'll see me dancing. Properly, with jasmine and everything."
Later, he can blame this on the moonshine. Or the dancing room. Or the wild laughter and music still going around them, sealing them away from the outside world, and whatever consequences face them out there. But he finds himself pressing his lips to the crown of her head, lingering on the silky smooth strands, the scent of moonshine and the gardenia oil she uses on her hair. It lasts no more than second, but Inej's hands curl in the fabric of his waistcoat. Her breath catches in her throat, not in pain or fear, just dazed wonder.
He holds the moment as long as he dares, like a magician dragging out the climax of a trick before he releases the tension and settles back against the wall. Inej is still in his arms, and the room dances on all around them. Just this once, he can give Jesper and the moonshine credit.

Midge Maisel Flashforwards
Okay, so I want to be clear here, and I hope this post doesn't incite backlash but I really wanted to get my thoughts out on the flashforwards provided in the first three episodes of Mrs Maisel
Spoilers Ahead!!!
So it did come as a shock to have these flashforwards, but I like it mainly for three reasons: 1) it gives light to Midge's future which is something very realistic as well as shed light on the fact that Midge's decisions have downsides as well; 2) it has This is Us vibes but something that was a little Forrest Gump meets How I Met Your Mother vibe and is set in the beginning of the episode instead of the end or a misleading event to hide a bombshell 3) ASP doesn't plan on returning it so don't expect a AYITL part to Mrs Maisel.
So with that, let's dive into the flashforwards:
First Flashforward- Esther Maisel
So for those who thought Esther was annoying and the fact that Midge Maisel is a terrible mother is unwarranted, you're wrong!!! Esther is definitely unique, given that she's very much a version of Abe and Midge in the earlier season with her mother in terms of how she views her relationship with her mom, but you can't help but be empathetic to her because yes, being a child of an uber-famous parent is not easy. Take for example, Gypsy the musical, or children of famous actors- its something that happens. Given that Esther was a baby when Midge started out her career unlike Ethan, her mommy issues are bigger and more intense. I hope the show extends this further.
Second Flashforward- Midge's 60 Second show
So, I think this is by far the biggest of them all, because it gives some great and not so great updates on Midge's life- her career has skyrocketed, she's got multiple awards, she did an infamous show at Carnegie Hall a decade after Lenny's own show, she toured worldwide (as she would've done at Shy's own tour), with Bob Hope (something Moishe thought she was doing) and made friendships with renowned faces. On the downside- 4 failed marriages and multiple romantic relationships. This... is not exactly normal, but if you look at the romantic lives of these actors/celebrities- Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, Ginger Rogers, Irene Castle, Rita Hayworth, Sonny and Cher, Marlene Dietrich, even comedian Fanny Brice, you'll find that busted romantic lives is a common thread. If you also want fictional examples- A Star is Born, Blue Valentine, Revolutionary Road, Once, The Way We Were and many other similar movies.
With regards to Midge and Suzy's certain rift, it can be considered the opposite of Elvis Presley and Colonel Tom Parker. It's sad (but you kind of see it coming). It's like when bands break up- they'll find success but everyone wants their own identity. The worst enemy is yourself.
Third Flashforward
Ethan Maisel at 24 being a little aimless and having an unconventional professional journey (honoring his Jewish identity by working in Israel at a kibbutz and becoming a rabbi) and actually marrying a woman who is controlled and strong (an Army version of Midge- I like that they named her Chava, it's a callback to Fiddler on the Roof's third youngest daughter) shows his mommy issues which are different from Esther's but still there- it's all pretty in character. The fact that he keeps his engagement from his mother but still respects her nevertheless shows how much of mothering that we've seen from Midge from throughout the show has affected him.
Did you like this analysis???

The colourists working on this comic forgot to do a fair few things I think (Fiddle’s disappearing and fucking hideous leopard print anyone?) But MM’s green and red I think were the designers trying to do their own thing with his look maybe? He is ginger so they leaned into that, and a fair few of his costumes in his original debut are mostly green to be fair, even using lots of white at times. I think they went back to his classic purple and green because of nostalgia. Though I’m glad they kept him (mostly) fashionable and eccentric in his style. Considering MM was free and at a club when they teamed up, I’m guessing Fiddler (who had been out of the game for a while) borrowed some of Meister’s fits, or got the two gingers to help with his new villain/tech mogul wardrobe, hence the matching taste.
… I’m not normal about this man.
(Side note, this comic isn’t great but by god, it gives me more Music Meister and he isn’t being completely butchered this time so I’m happy)
Speed Force Meister oddly switches to green accented with bright red. I've joked he's broken into Riddler's apartment and stolen one of his suits, but...I think he might be wearing Fiddler's clothes.
I think the colorist might have confused Meister with Fiddler here (I mean, they're both green, but Meister has massive red shades on and Fiddler is really fluffy looking...)
Speed Force gets this weird tency where it really likes to obscure Meister's face. His eyes are rarely seen full on and either by shadows or his shades
Interestingly, Meister switches back to his original suit and colors here. (Oddly, he's not wearing his shades in the club.)
Of note:
It's kinda just clicked for me that this image is mixing Meister's 2 designs here. The red shades are Green Meister's. Purple Meister's shades are colorless glass.
Pffhpff MEISTER SHIPS HIMSELF WITH MOD
I like Meister/Fiddler, tho (also somebody needs to draw Meister just stealing Fiddler's clothes.)
The change from purple to green and back again could come from purple and green being each other's accent colors (think Joker, purple-green, Riddler, green-purple.)

Thanks for the tag! I really miss the interactions! Here are mine:
Trying to wrack my brain for a current fave... ah! DUNE!
The Labyrinth (David Bowie and Jennifer Connely)
I don't think I have any. I usually avoid watching them.
The Mist
Musical and Horror genre are tied at first place
Biopics. Sometimes they tend to exaggerate.
As a watcher of horror and suspense movies... yes! Hasn't stopped me from watching them.
The Mist, I wanna murder that overly religious woman villain. Heck, I can't even utter her name!
Avatar: Way of Water. It was beautiful but too long! Also I love every moment Stephen Lang is in the picture.
Spiderman: No Way Home. It was brilliant!
Green Mile. Thank god I watched this movie alone in the theaters. I dont think I have enough tissue for two.
The Fifth Element: Little Light of Love
Fiddler on the Roof
Frank Darabont
The Birdcage
Just as annoyed and irritated >:(
Snacks and drinks are a necessity in watching movies. You don't want your stomach to have a conversation with you.
All Avengers movie
Costume! Music comes second. I love looking at period pieces.
Exorcist Awakening. Other than that *shrug*
Tagging: @alphagravy @i-be-busy-witchering @eycsnow666 @northernolddragon @ginger-old-wyrm

April 13th 1996 saw the death of the Orkney Poet and writer George Mackay Brown.
George Mackay Brown is perhaps Orkney's best known author. He was born in Stromness in 1921 and his poetry, plays, novels and short stories continue to have an impact worldwide.
His work was inspired by Orcadian folklore – the myths, legends and sagas - Orkney’s Norse heritage, the natural landscape, his childhood and exploration of his faith. He wrote about his hometown of Stromness and chronicled the lives of the people who lived here and the way of life.
After six years as the Stromness correspondent for the Orkney Herald and a period recovering from tuberculosis, GMB, as he is often referred to in Orkney, from 1951 studied at Newbattle College in Midlothian under warden Edwin Muir, a fellow Orcadian writer. He went on to read English at Edinburgh University, returning to Orkney in 1961.
Dubbed by some as the Orkney bard, his first book of poems sold out in days. Despite almost continual ill-health he continued to write and gained numerous prizes for his work. These included the James Tait Memorial Prize for his novel The Golden Bird: Two Orkney Stories. Beside the Ocean of Time was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and won the Scottish Book of the Year title from the Saltire Society. He was awarded the OBE and three honorary degrees.
His weekly column which ran for more than 25 years in The Orcadian from 1971 is in print in book form and gives an insight into his Stromness routines and his observations on a changing Orkney.
George Mackay Brown died in 1996 but his legacy lives on in his words, and in the George Mackay Brown Fellowship. http://gmbfellowship.org.uk/
The Horse Fair
Miss Instone said, ‘Children, you were all at the Fair yesterday, I’m sure. Out slates! Out slate pencils! Write a composition on the following – My Day at the Fair…’
Twelve slate pencils squeaked and squealed on slate like mice in a barn.
Willie rubbed honey-of-sleep out of his eyes. He wrote.
I went to the Horse Fair. I sat in the cart beside old Da. In Dounby We left Daffodil in the Smithfield yard. A policeman was holding on to a man that could hardly stand. Old Da gave me a penny and a farthing. Old Da went into the inn. I bought a bottle of stone ginger at an old wife’s tent. I saw hundreds and hundreds of people. I saw Skatehorn the tramp. Mr Sweyn went on with a long stick and a deer-stalker And the women curtsied in his wake. I saw Old Da in the crowd at last. His face was like a barn lantern. We stood and watched the tug-o’-war. What red faces, bulging eyes, what staggerings! It came on to wind and rain. The whisky tent Blew out like a ship in a gale. Old Da had dealings with the blacksmith, Nails and a new plough. The blacksmith wrote numbers and words in a ledger, after he had licked a small blunt pencil.
The blacksmith Took a bottle and two glasses from a stone shelf. He gave me sixpence! We went home in the cart, Daffodil Danced all the way! She struck many stars from a stone. The fiddler! – I nearly forgot the fiddler. The whole Fair Seemed to go round his fiddle. I saw A coal-black man stretched on a board of nails. Three farmers, Quoys and Grayarth and Longbreck, Seemed like they had red patches sewn on their faces, coming out of the whisky tent. Daffodil Whinnied at the stars, ‘What are you, Nails or mayflowers?’ The moon was a skull. Then the moon was bees and honey. I woke up. Old Da carried me out of the cart to our fire.
‘Spelling and punctuation need special attention,’ said Miss Instone. ‘Few of you, it seems, had a really enjoyable day.’
Sprinkling of water on eleven slates, rag rubbings, sighs.
Willie spat on his slate and wiped out that day with the sleeve of his gray jersey.
